Q) How do I know when it is time to come in for a checkup?

A) The American Dental Association recommends patients with good oral health schedule a checkup and hygiene visit every six months. If your condition requires more frequent visits, we'll let you know. It is important to keep up with regular checkups because, while you may not notice any pain or problems with your teeth, we may find indications of potential problems. During your hygiene appointment, we'll remove plaque, tartar, and hardened food residue from your teeth. We will also check you’re the health of your gums.

Q) My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

A) It might be. Bleeding is often an indication of a problem. Gums tend to bleed as a result of the patient brushing too roughly or even from early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis. Drs. Katherine and Brian Lee can teach you the proper brushing pressure for gentle, effective daily oral care. If your gums show signs of gum disease, we will most likely perform a deep hygiene treatment to stop the disease and restore health to your gums. Gum disease is the leading source of tooth loss in American adults, and it is linked to some really serious health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, and respiratory problems. Because untreated gum disease can cause significant damage to your health, call for an assessment now.

Q) Do I have to floss every day? Is it really that important?

A) It certainly is! Flossing can eliminate food particles, plaque, and tartar otherwise trapped between teeth. These three culprits irritate gums, lead to gum disease, promote decay, and even cause bad breath. We can teach you how to floss quickly and effectively.

Q) Why is oral cancer so serious?

A) Oral cancer kills more people nationwide than either cervical or skin (melanoma) cancer, and only half of patients diagnosed will survive more than five years. Because it is usually painless, oral cancer is a sneaky disease that often goes undetected (and untreated) until it spreads to the neck and lymph nodes. At this point, treatment is much more difficult. Drs. Katherine and Brian Lee will perform an oral cancer screening during your exam, and if the oral cancer is detected in the early stages, patients are more likely to survive.
